- symptoms must be present in early developmental period
- symptoms cause clinically significant impairment important parts of life
- symptoms are not better explained by a diagnosis of intellectual disability
core deficit in ASD
- inability to relate to others and to take perspective
- difficulty to perceive and understand the overall meaning of events
Aspergers’
- high functioning end of autism
- speech is okay but communication is impaired
- involves a single interest that is pursued obsessively
Savants
- some autistics have savant skills
- typically are special memory abilities in the areas of music, calc, and drawing
