What did the two cards contain?
One showed a vertical black line (the standard line) whose length is to be matched. the other showed three vertical lines (comparison lines) one of the same length as the standard line and the others had a difference of about 2cm or more.
How many participants took part in the study and what gender were they?
123 Male Undergraduates
What did the participants believe that they were taking part in?
A psychological experiment in ‘Visiual judgement’
What was the real purpose of the experiment?
To see if the lone naive participant would react to the behaviour of the confederates.
Where was the naive participant sat and why?
The naive participant was always seated last or second to last. To ensure that he heard the other’s answers before giving his own.
How many trials were there?
18 trials
How many of the trials were the confederates told to give the same obviously incorrect answer? (called critical trials)
12 out of the total 18 trials
How many people were in each group?
Groups of 7 to 9 (confederates and naive participant)
Why did Asch include additional procedures?
Asch questioned whether the size of the group of the majority

This was varied from 1-15 people

One of the group answered truthfully, this role was played by a confederate or another naive participant.

A confederate was introduced which disagreed with the majority but also disagreed with the naive participant.
In Asch’s additional procedures…what was the role of a partner who changes his mind?
In this variation, the confederate partner starts by giving correct responses for the first six critical trials, but then joined the majority for the remaining six critical trials.

The partner starts by giving correct responses for the first six critical trials and then has to leave because of an important appointment.
