Asch - CONCLUSIONS Flashcards
What did Asch conclude?
Asch concluded that there is a surprisingly strong tendency to conform even when the answer is clear.
What were the factors which affected conformity?
The pressure of conformity was reduced when there was only a small majority. conformity was also reduced with the presence of a dissenter even when the dissenter gave a different wrong answer. this shows that the effect of the majority depends on whether they remain unanimous.
What was the most important finding that Asch wanted to find from conducting this experiment?
The most important finding was to see whether there was any conformity at all in an unambiguous situation.
what did Asch conclude from the study?
Asch concluded that on two thirds of the trials, people had remained independent. This shows evidence that people can resist the pressure to conform. However, there is also evidence to show that people have the tendency to conform when faced with a unanimous majority.
