Asch conformity study Flashcards
Sherif(1935) the autokinetic effect
Optical illusion, if you stare at a spot of light in a darkened room it will appear to move./ individuals tend to change their views to which resembled the group/ Conforming/ Demonstrates internalisation
What did Sherif find after several trails of the auto kinetic study?
Different responses converged to a single estimate over several trails
Solomon Asch(1951)
Line judgement task/ 8 participants/ 7 confederates/ 75% yielded to majority at least once/ 95% rebelled once/ 25% never conformed/ controls conformed less than 1%
Conformity in private vs public
Same during first 3 trails/ public conformed less,
Conformity
A change in behavoir or belief as a result of real or imagined peer pressure.
Normative conformity
Yeilding to a group in order to fit in
Informational conformity: lack of knowledge
Informational conformity
lack of knowledge and looks to group for guidance.
Compliance
When an individual accepts influence because he hopes to achieve a
favorable reaction from another person or group. ( Kelman 1958)
Internalisation
When a person publicly changes their behavior to fit in with the group/ Change is behavior is permanent/ genuine. ( Kelman 1958)
Identification
When an individual accepts influence because he wants to maintain or
establish a satisfying self-defining relationship to another person or group.(Kelman 1958)
Ingratiational
When a person conforms to impress or gain favor/acceptance from other
people. Man (1960).
Solomon Asch aim
to investigate the extents to which social
pressure from a majority group could aftect a person to conform
Who identified Normative conformity and informational conformity as two reasons to why people conform?
Deutsch and Gerrard (1995)
What limitations did Asch study have?
the study is that is used a biased sample. All were male students of same age/ the study lacks population validity and that the results cannot be generalized to females or older groups
Modification to Asch study( Moscovici study)
four participants and two confederates/ They were shown 36 slides of different shades of blue/ confederates answered green 36 total times but in second part they said green 24 times and blue 12 times/ 8.42% impact of minority on majority
