Platelet Aggregation Inhibitor, Non-Narcotic Analgesic, Antipyretic

Mechanism of Action
A
- Prevents formation of thromboxane A2, which causes platelet aggregation, forming plugs that obstruct or constrict small cornonary arteries
- Anti-Inflammatory

Indications
A
- Fever
- Inflamation
- New chest pain/discomfort suggestive of ACS.
- Angina, acute MI

Contraindications
A
- Known Sensitivity
- GI bleeding
- Active ulcer disease
- Hemorrhagic stroke
- Bleeding disorders
- Children with chickenpox or flu-like syptoms

Side Effects
A
- Anaphlaxis
- Angioedema
- Bronchospasm
- Bleeding
- Stomach irritation, nausea/vomiting

Administration
A

Myocardial Infarction/ACS
- Adult: 160-325 mg PO ( alternatively, four 81 mg baby ASA are often given)
- Pediatric: 3-5 mg/kg/day to 5-10 mg/kg/day given as a single dose

Pain or Fever
- Adult: 325-650 mg PO (1-2 adult tablets) every 4-6 hours
- Pediatric: 60-90 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 4-6 hours
