AS91156 - Cells Flashcards
Organelles
Units within cells that perform specific tasks required by the cell.
Cell Membrane
Surrounds and protects the fluid inside a cell (cytoplasm).
Selective Permeability
Only allows the transfer of certain materials into and out of the cell.
Amphiphilic (Phospholipids)
Part of them is attracted to water (their heads) and part of them is repelled by water (their tails).
Channel Proteins
Open on both ends and allow molecules to pass through freely (This is how molecules such as glucose enters a cell)
Carrier Proteins
Open to one side of the membrane at a time and they often require energy to transport molecules.
Active Site
A specific shaped part of an enzyme where the substrate fits
Active Transport
The movement of molecules from an area of low concentration to an area of high which requires energy
Aerobic Respiration
Respiration in the presence of oxygen
Anabolic Enzyme
An enzyme that takes small molecules and joins them together
Anaerobic Respiration
Respiration with limited oxygen
Catabolic Enzyme
Catabolic enzymes catalyze biochemical reactions that break down larger complex molecules into smaller units.
Cell Wall
Rigid layer of cells found only in plants
Chlorophyll
Pigment found in plants which gives the plant its green color
Chloroplast
Site of photosynthesis
Cristae
Part of mitochondria (folds) electron transfer chain occurs
Denature
The changing in the shape of the active site of an enzyme, so he substrate can no longer fit - caused by high temperatures and incorrect pH
Diffusion
The movement of materials from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
