AS350 SD Emergencies Flashcards
What do you turn off in an engine failure? (time permitting)
FFCL to shutdown
Close fuel shutoff valve
Boost pumps off
Generator off
What are the symptoms of an engine flame out in flight?
Drop in NR, low rotor horn
Torque at 0
NG falling off to 0
GEN light
ENG low pressure light
Jerk in yaw axis (only if in high powered flight)
What is the procedure for a large drop in fuel flow rate?
Same symptoms and procedure as for complete engine failure
Carry out autorotation
What are the indications of an excessive fuel flow rate?
NG, T4, NR and TQ increase
In the event of a governor failure creating an excessive fuel flow rate, what are the pilot actions required?
Do not reduce collective pitch
Reduce FFCL until NR is in middle of green
Continue flight with governor out of action
Any reduction in collective pitch will cause an increase in NR which must be counteracted with an adjustment in FFCL
Landing approach along low gradient path with IAS @ 65 kts, maintaining NR in upper boundary of green area
On final approach, reduce speed without touching FFCL. NR will drop when collective in increased on touchdown.
After touchdown, reduce FFCL before decreasing collective
What are the indications of a governor failure producing NG oscillations?
Hunting of the NG, TQ, T4 and potential jerking in the yaw axis
What is required of the pilot if NG oscillations occur?
Change collective pitch
If NG oscillations persist while fuel pressure and engine oil pressure are correct, reduce FFCL to exit controlled area.
If NG oscillations continue, land as soon as possible and shut down engine if it tends to diverge
What must the pilot do if a fire occurs while starting the engine?
Move FFCL to shutdown
Close fuel shut off valve
Boost pumps off
Apply rotor brake
Motor engine for 10 seconds then switch off the battery
What is the required pilot action if there is a fire in flight (the “FIRE” light illuminates on CWP)
(Do a right circuit to confirm you’re on fire, land immediately)
Textbook:
Enter autorotation
Close fuel shut off
Boost pumps, GEN switched off
Switch off MASTER SW if smell of burning
If there is smoke in the cabin and the source of the smoke is not identified, what is the required pilot action?
Shut off heating/demisting
If smell of smoke persists:
Switch off “MASTER SW”
When smoke clears, set all switches to OFF, including GEN
Set MASTER SW back to normal position
Switch on GEN, check voltage and current
If all is normal, switch on the systems one by one until the malfunction is identified
In a tail rotor drive failure, landing is easier with the wind from the ______
Right
In a tail rotor drive failure, if the airspeed is lower than 20 knots a go around may be impossible due to _______
the loss of efficiency of the fin
Failure of the tail rotor in high power flight results in a yaw movement to the _____
Left
If the tail rotor fails in the hover or at low speed in ground effect, the pilot will _________
Bring the aircraft to the ground by reducing collective pitch before the yaw rate is too high
If the tail rotor fails in the hover or at low speed out of ground effect, the pilot will ________
(Punch longline if on)
Reduce collective pitch moderately to reduce yaw torque, and simultaneously increase speed
If the tail rotor fails in forward flight, what will the pilot do?
Reduce power as much as possible and maintain forward speed (weathercock effect)
Select a suitable landing area for a steep approach at a power enabling reasonably coordinated flight
On final approach, shut down the engine and make an autorotative landing at the lowest possible speed
What airspeed should be flown with stuck pedals/tail rotor control failure?
70 kts
What are the steps following tail rotor control failure (stuck pedals)
Set IAS to 70 kts
Press HYD accumulator test button, after 5 seconds set the test button back to the normal position
Make a shallow approach to a clear landing area with a slight sideslip to the left.
Perform a run on landing, the side slip will be reduced progressively as power is applied
When, if ever, would you press the ACCU TST pushbutton while in flight?
With a stuck left pedal, pushing ACCU TST will bring the tail rotor down to low pitch and provide a favourable setting opposed to stuck left
(if pedal is stuck right, just leave it)
If when flying, the fuel pressure gauge is indicating no pressure, what should be the pilots next steps?
Check the boost pump is switched on
Check fuel gauge reading
Check the fuse
Can you take off with the fuel pump inoperative?
No
Flight with the fuel pump inoperative is higher risk when operating at _____ temperatures and ______ altitudes
hot temperatures, high altitudes
(risk of premature pump wear)
If when flying, the fuel pressure indicator is pointing in the yellow arc, what should be the pilots first step?
Test the F.FILTER light for illumination
The fuel pressure is indicating in the yellow arc, and when the pilot tests the F.FILTER light, it does not illuminate. What is the next step?
Land as soon as possible
The fuel pressure is indicating in the yellow arc, and when the pilot tests the F.FILTER light, it illuminates as it should. What is the next step?
Check the system voltage, if voltage is correct the fuel pump and/or the indicating system is in question.
Flight may be continued
If the engine oil pressure gauge is pointing in the lower yellow arc when NG is above 70%, what is required of the pilot?
Test CWP to check if ENG P light illuminates
If light illuminates as it should, and the torque is reading accurately, land as soon as practical
If light illuminates, but torque is reading much too low, land as soon as possible
If ENG P does not illuminate when tested, land as soon as possible or shut down engine and autorotate if torque is reading much too low
If in flight the engine oil temperature is reading at or above the maximum specified, what should the pilot do?
Land if possible, shut down and check that the cooler fan works
If landing impossible, increase airspeed to 80 kts and reduce power. Temperature should fall rapidly, but if it doesn’t :
Land as soon as possible
What will the pilot do if the NG indicator fails?
Do not exceed maximum torque, and keep T4 below 735C, or 710C if OAT is colder than -20C
If the torque meter fails, what is required of the pilot?
Do not allow T4 to rise above the limits placarded in the helicopter
Safe number, keep T4 below 500 degrees if can’t find placard (or 600 degrees if its 15 degrees at sea level
If the T4 indicator fails, are you allowed to start the engine?
No
If the T4 indicator fails, are you allowed to use heater/demisting or any other form of bleed air heat?
No
If the T4 indicator fails, what parameters must you remain within?
Do not exceed 94% NG
What are 3 reasons why the NR/N2 indicators would be married below the green range?
- Excessive power demand =lower collective
- Electrical power system voltage too low (less than 18V gives an NR indicator reading lower than the actual rotor speed)
=Press “MASTER SW” pushbutton - Engine governor malfunction
If NR is exceeding N2, then…
NR reading is incorrect
If N2 is exceeding NR, then …
NR reading is probably incorrect
In the event of a complete loss of NR indication, what should the pilot do?
Maintain torque above 10%
NR reading is given by N2 pointer
Land as soon as practical
