AS1 1.6 Newton's Laws of Motion Flashcards
What is Newton’s 1st Law of Motion?
‘Every body will continue in a state of rest or uniform velocity unless acted on by a resultant force’
What is Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion?
‘Acceleration is directly proportional to Fr acting in the same direction and is inversly proportional to mass, Fr = ma’
What is Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion?
‘If body A exerts a force on body B, body B will exert an equal and opposite force on body A’
Example of Newton’s Laws in action
‘A man stands on a stationary raft on still water. He then jumps off onto the shore. Explain how Newton’s laws of motion apply to the movement of the raft before and after the man jumps off’
-Before, Raft at rest so there is no Fr
-After, Raft accelerates so there is an Fr acting on it
-Force on man from the raft is equal and opposite to the force on the raft from the man or that resistive forces cause the raft to decelerate
What is friction?
It is a resistive force that acts against/opposes motion.
