Q

Why is collagen a fibrous protein?

A
  • Has non-polar side chains - is insoluble in water
  • Has a structural role in the body
  • Little or no tertiary structure
  • A long chain of amino acids
  • Chain is made of two different amino acids, very few amino acids

Q

Outline the method of chromatography that will separate the main amino acid in collagen

A
  • Break down collagen chains into separate amino acids by hydrolysis
  • Place sample on chromatography paper/stationary phase
  • Add drops of collagen solution on chromatography and dry, repeat this to increase concentration of solution on chromatography paper
