AS: Laws of Motion Flashcards
Define Newton’s Law of Inertia (Law 1)
A body will continue in a state of rest or uniform velocity unless acted upon by an external or unbalanced force
Define Newton’s Law of Acceleration (Law 2)
A body’s rate of change in momentum is proportional to the size of the force applied and acts in the same direction as the force is applied
Define Newton’s Law of Reaction (Law 3)
Every action force applied to a body has an equal and opposite reaction force
Apply Newton’s 1st Law to a conversion in rugby
The ball will remain at rest on the tee until an external force is applied (the player’s foot)
Apply Newton’s 2nd Law to a conversion in rugby
The greater the force applied to the ball by the foot of the player, the greater rate of change in momentum
Apply Newton’s 3rd Law to a conversion in rugby
A forward and upward action is applied to the ball by the player’s foot so the ball exerts an equal backwards and downwards force to the player’s foot
