Paleolithic Period
Old Stone Age
prehistoric images found on the walls of caves all over the world.
Cave paintings
Where the first cave paintings were found. These paintings are sometimes called “The Sistine Chapel of Paleolithic Art.”
1879 in Altamira, Spain (Cave of Altamira)
contains the most important preserved cave paintings of the Paleolithic Era.
The Chauvet Cave
One of the oldest arts of man.
Sculpture
Probably fertility symbols or some form of primitive religious icons. They are also believed to symbolize respect for women as bearers of future offsprings.
Venus figures
The most famous early image of woman found in Austria.
Venus of Willendorf
The first bas-relief sculpture of a naked woman.
Venus of Laussel
The earliest form of human dwellings.
Caves
consisting of a single upright stone or megalith.
Menhir or monolith
two or more upright stones supporting a horizontal stone slab.
Dolmen
one large flat stone which is supported by two or more upright stones.
Cromlech
One famous cromlech. It is composed of group of stones arranged in concentric circles.
