Atmospheric perspective

Foreshortening
Depicting an object or human body in a picture so as to produce an illusion of projection or extension in space - elements are parallel to the canvas
Diptych/Triptych/Polyptych
Religious paintings originating in the medieval period and continuing onwards. They are pictoral programs which consist of panels joined by hinges.
Genre
Type or category of paintings.
Historical, mythology, genre scene, still life, portraiture, landscape
Annunciation
- Mary, Gabriel, holy ghost
- Sudden appearance – narrative, informing her of immaculate conception
Grisaille
Painting figures as if they were a sculpture, reduced colour palette
Contraposto
Pose inspired by classical antiquity – shoulder and hip line not parallel and the whole weight of the body is on one leg, other is folded slightly - representing movement in a static position
Linear perspective
Objects and figures are situated in relation to a vanishing point where all lines converge
- Distance will determine size of object
- Proportional relation between all elements in composition
Contrast
Objects/people against dark background
Sfumato
Italian word - smoke
Blurring the edges of the background/contours to better replicated reality
Bodegones
Genre scene with a still life in the foreground or just a still life
Afranscesado
Someone who supports French influence
