Articular System Flashcards
Three Types of Joints
- Fibrous
-Cartilaginous
-Synovial
Ball & Socket Joint
“Ball” of one bone fits into the “socket” of another allowing movement around 3 axis
(Humerus rests on glenoid cavity)
Gliding
Connects flat or curved surfaces that glide against one another
(Between the tarsals and among the carpals)
Hinge Joint
A convex portion of one bone fits into the concave portion of another
(Joint between Ulna and Humerus)
Pivot Joint
Round point of a bone fits into a groove of another
(First two vertebrae in the neck which allows movement of the head)
Saddle Joints
Movement in two planes Carpo metacarpal articulation of the thumb
Ellipsoid Joint
Movement in two planes
(Wrist)
Dislocations
Bone is dislocated from its joint
(common in finger or shoulder joints)
Seperation
More serious than dislocated- In a shoulder the clavicle and scapula are disrupted
Osteoarthritis
Loss of cartilage at joints
Rotator Cuff Tears
1 or all 4 muscles making up the rotator cuff at the should joint
- When apart of the tendon is torn all 3 muscles around the joint are effected
