what happened with the dancing chicken
a chicken walked over, pulled on a loop which begins some music, steps up on a disk, begins to scratch until the automatic feeder fires, then the chicken goes to eat. ppl see it as dancing. this exhibit was unplanned, and it was found 50% of the chickens did the scratching pattern and another 25% did other behaviors. the researchers planned around to make use of this pattern and this resulted in such a dancing exhibit
what happened with raccoons
tried to get it to put coins into a box but it had trouble letting go of the coins. this is with one coin. with two, he couldnt let go and also exhibited a rubbing behavior despite nonreinforcement, which became worse and time went on
what happened with the chickens and the capsule
a light triggered them to put on a loop which releases capsule onto a slide, and then it comes to the end. then the chicken pecks it to knock it forward off the slide and out to the observer. they kept pulling the capsule up once it began to go down the slide
chicken in cage
once the cage was removed, it became very excited and ran around everywhere in the field. this was so disruptive even tho it wasnt reinforced, and the cage had to be put back
pigs
pigs were supposed to put coins into a piggy bank but got slower and slower over time
what was the theory as to why these animals were not acting as planned
they were driftng towards instinctive behaviors. “learned behavior drifts towards instinctive behavior”
