We have considerable evidence that supports the integration of addiction treatment into the care of hospitalized individuals with injection drug use–related infections, including IE.5 It is in the best interest of clinicians to make every effort to offer effective treatment to PWID in a nonpunitive, nonjudgmental approach that avoids shame and stigmatization. Ignoring the underlying addiction leads to further harm, complications, and ultimately worse outcomes.
