1
Q

Abstract

A

School-related difficulties are commonly associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).

This article describes effective school- based intervention strategies including behavioral interventions, modifications to academic instruction, and home-school communication programs.

One overlooked aspect of treatment of children with ADHD is the need to form partnerships among school professionals who can work collaboratively on interventions for children with ADHD. Approaches to developing effective collaboration between teachers and school psychologists are presented.

Multiple treatment strategies implemented in a consistent fashion across school years can optimize the school success of students with ADHD.

Key Takeaways

A
  1. ADHD is a common disorder that affects many students in the classroom and can result in academic and social difficulties.
  2. Effective interventions for ADHD include behavior management techniques, academic accommodations, and medication when appropriate.
  3. Behavior management techniques such as praise and positive reinforcement, self-monitoring, and token economies can be used to improve classroom behavior and academic performance.
  4. Academic accommodations such as providing extra time on assignments and tests, breaking tasks into smaller parts, and providing a quiet workspace can help students with ADHD succeed academically.
  5. Medication can be effective in reducing the symptoms of ADHD, but should be used in conjunction with other interventions and only after a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional.
  6. Teachers and other school personnel play an important role in identifying and supporting students with ADHD, and should work closely with parents and healthcare professionals to develop effective interventions (Collaborative Consultation)
  7. Traditional social skills training has not been found to lead to durable changes in interpersonal functioning in real-world environments. There have been relatively few studies of social relationship interventions for children with ADHD, especially in school settings.
