Arthropods Flashcards
Arthropod
An invertebrate with an exoskeleton.
Molting
When an arthropod wants to grow, they shed their exoskeleton, called molting.
Pheremones
Chemical signals that are released for the purpose of communication.
Thorax
Part of an arthropods body. The biggest part of the body, commonly has legs attached. Middle segment of body.
Abdomen
Part of an arthropods body. The last part of the body, often stores nutrients or houses reproductive functions.
Cephalothorax
When the thorax and the head are fused or attached, it is called a Cephalothorax
Exoskeleton
A skeleton on the outside of the body.
Cheliped
The limb on a crustacean that has the claw.
Malpighean Tubes
The system through which arthropods ‘breathe’
Arachnid
A kind of arthropod. Contains spiders and scorpions.
Spiders
An arachnid. Have 8 legs, a cephalothorax, have a venomous fanged bite. Are predatory, and most make webs.
Metamorphosis
Stages in which and arthropod goes from a baby into an adult.
Crustaceans
A large, typically aquatic, arthropod.
Insects
The most common arthropods, most can fly, have 3 body parts.
Antennae
Can detect pheromones, also detect vibration and are used for ‘feeling’
