Arthropods Flashcards
Arthropod
invertebrate animal of the large phylum Arthropoda, such as an insect, spider, or crustacean.
Molting
shed old feathers, hair, or skin, or an old shell, to make way for a new growth
Pheromones
chemical substance produced and released into the environment by an animal, especially a mammal or an insect, affecting the behavior or physiology of others of its species.
Thorax
the part of the body of a mammal between the neck and the abdomen, including the cavity enclosed by the ribs, breastbone, and dorsal vertebrae
Abdomen
the part of the body of a vertebrate containing the digestive organs
Cephalothorax
the fused head and thorax of spiders and other chelicerate arthropods
Exoskeleton
rigid external covering for the body in some invertebrate animals
Cheliped
one of the pair of legs that bears the large chelae in decapod crustaceans.
Malpighean tubes
a tubular excretory organ, numbers of which open into the gut in insects and some other arthropods.
Arachnid
an arthropod of the class Arachnida, such as a spider or scorpion.
Spiders
a eightlegged predatory arachnid with an unsegmented body consisting of a fused head and thorax and a rounded abdomen. Spiders have fangs that inject poison into their prey, and most kinds spin webs in which to capture insects
Metamorphosis
the process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages.
Crustaceans
an arthropod of the large, mainly aquatic group Crustacea, such as a crab, lobster, shrimp, or barnacle.
Insects
a small arthropod animal that has six legs and generally one or two pairs of wings
Antennae
either of a pair of long, thin sensory appendages on the heads of insects, crustaceans, and some other arthropods.
Scorpions
terrestrial arachnid with lobsterlike pincers and a poisonous sting at the end of its jointed tail, which it can hold curved over the back. Most kinds live in tropical and subtropical areas
Swimmerets
a forked swimming limb of a crustacean, five pairs of which are typically attached to the abdomen
Green glands
have an excretory function and open at the bases of the larger antennae
Woodtick
blood sucker. find them on outside animals
Grasshopper
eats grass, has 2 sets of wings has 5 eyes
Butterfly
beautiful insects 4 wings 2 eyes 6 legs
housefly
fly around outside
mosquito
drink blood, small can carry diease
crab
a crustacean with a broad carapace, stalked eyes, and five pairs of legs, the first pair of which are modified as pincers. Crabs are abundant on many shores, especially in the tropics, where some have become adapted to life on land.
