Arthropod Flashcards
Arthropod
invertebrate animal having an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and jointed appendages.
Molting
shed old shell, to make way for a new growth.
Pheromones
chemical substance produced and released into the environment by an animal
Thorax
the middle section of the body of an insect, between the head and the abdomen, bearing the legs and wings.
Abdomen
the posterior part of the body of an arthropod, especially the segments of an insect’s body behind the thorax.
Cephalothorax
the fused head and thorax of spiders and other chelicerate arthropods.
Exoskeleton
external skeleton that supports and protects an animal’s body, in contrast to the internal skeleton
Cheliped
claw, nipper, or pincer, is a pincer-like organ terminating certain limbs of some arthropods, Legs bearing a chela are called chelipeds.
Malpighean tubes
excretory organ, numbers of which open into the gut in insects and some other arthropods.
Arachnid
class of joint-legged invertebrate animals, in the subphylum Chelicerata. All arachnids have eight legs, although the front pair of legs
Spiders
largest order of arachnids and rank seventh in total species diversity
Metamorphosis
includes, in insects, the transformation of a maggot into an adult fly and a caterpillar into a butterfly and, in amphibians, the changing of a tadpole into a frog.
Crustaceans
includes such familiar animals as crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill, woodlice and barnacles.
Insects
invertebrates within the arthropod phylum that have a chitinous exoskeleton, a three-part body, three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes and one pair of antennae
Antennae
pair of long, thin sensory appendages on the heads of insects, crustaceans, and some other arthropods.
