Arthrology Flashcards
What are the 2 joint classifications
Structural
And
Functional
Structural joints
Based on the tissues binding the bones together
Functional joints
Based on movement of bones
Fibrous joints
Lack a joint cavity & held together by fibrous connective tissue
Cartilaginous joints
Lack joint cavity & held together by cartilage tissue
Diarthrodial joints
Freely moving joints except distal tibiofibular joint
Amphiarthrodial joints
Joints that allow for expansion and contraction but not free moving (slightly movable) ( pubis symphysis)
Synarthrodial joints
Completely fused, non moving joints ( skull sutures)
Hinge joint
Flexion and extension only ( the elbow)
Bicondylar joint
Flexion and extension ( the knee)
Condyloid joint
Flexion, extension, abduction, adduction
Ball & socket joint
Rounded head fitting into a fossa
Pivot joint
Bone rotates around another
Saddle joint
Flexion, extension, abduction, abduction & circumduction
(The thumb only)
Gliding joint
2 or more bones glide across each other ( metacarpals)
What does the fibrous capsule do?
Encloses the joint
What is synovial membrane?
Inner lining the secretes fluid
What is synovial fluid?
Lubricating fluid within the synovial capsule
What are bursa sacs?
Sacs of synovial fluid where tendons and ligaments rub against bone
What is the meniscus?
Crescent shaped cartilage that adds additional support and stability
What is Articular cartilage ?
Hyaline cartilage that covers the Articular surface of bone
Define a ligament
Connective tissue that binds bone to bone for joint movement
Define tendon
Connective tissue that binds muscle to bone
Why are joints relevant to what we do?
Damage to joints anatomy are visible on a radiograph
