Ankylosis
The fixation of a joint, often in an abnormal position, as a result from destruction of subchondral bone and articular cartilage
Attenuation
A decrease in the vitality of an organism; or the decrease in the severity of a disease
Bursitis
An inflammation of the fluid filled sac surrounding a joint and is responsible for the smooth movement of muscles and tendons interacting with bones
Cachexia
A physical wasting syndrome that causes weakness and a loss of weight, fat and muscle
Crepitus
A crackling feeding or sound under the skin and in the joints. It is produced by the fractured ends of a bone moving against each other
Dermatomyositis
A disease of unknown cause involving both the skin and skeletal muscle and characterized by swelling, inflammation and degeneration of muscle tissue
Episcleritis
Inflammation of the thin membrane which coats the sclera of the eye causing redness and pain. This is an indirect impairment of rheumatoid arthritis
Exostoses
A spur, or body outgrowth from a bone
Gout
A kind of arthritis characterized by an attack of sudden, burning pain, stiffness and swelling in a joint
Haplotype
A group of alleles on genes usually inherited as a unit of their close linkage on a single chromosome
Lyme disease
A bacterial illness caused by a bacterium called a “spirochete”. It causes abnormalities in the skin, joints, heart, and nervous system
Polymyositis
Inflammation of many muscles in the body at once. Marked by muscle weakness, pain and swelling, especially in the neck and muscles of the extremities
Scleritis
An inflammatory disease that affects the sclera; it may be localized, nodular or diffuse. It causes redness of the eye and severe pain
