Artesian Basin Flashcards
What is the great artesian basin?
Is a vast underground water reservoir lying beneath approximately 1/5 of the Australian continent.
What is the great artesian basin- what does it consist of etc…
It consists of a system of sedimentary layers which were laid down over millions of years and stores over 65 million mega litres of water.
How do we get water out of the basin?
By using bores.
Where does the water come from when we get from the bores
The water comes from aquifers underground and the bores extract the water.
How does an artesian spring work?
The flat surface of the ground is an impermeable layer of rock. Along that surface their are cracks in which when it rains water goes in these are called the recharge areas. The water then travels underground and collects in aquifers. Pressure begins to build and becomes to strong that water bubbles up to the surface and creates springs
Why are some plants and animals endangered at the artesian springs?
- they have lost their habitat due to humans. Using the groundwater and logging.
- species have been hunted
- small population to start with.
Why are the artesian springs important to Australia?
- They provide a source of water for both human, plants and animals.
- They provide a habitat to unique plants and animals.
- water source for industries and agriculture.
- Recreational activities for humans- fishing water skiing etc.
- tourist attraction
Draw a diagram of the artesian spring and how it works
On white board
What problems are occurring with the management of the basin.
- People are using way too much water
- There wasting water
- They are damaging animals and plants habitats because they’re using too much water
