Arteries/Veins Flashcards
Elastic (conducting arteries)
Largest artery that acts as a pressure reservoir for continuous blood flow
Muscular (distributing) artery
Better ability to constrict, not as elastic and distribute blood to specific parts of the body
Arterioles
Smallest arteries that transports blood into capillary beds and regulate blood flow to specific parts of body
Capillaries
Only contain tunica intima and they provide exchange of materials between blood and tissue cells
Venules
Smallest veins that drain capillary beds and merge to form veins
Veins
Low pressure vessels that return blood to heart
Tunica intima
Endothelium and subendothelium on veins plus internal elastic membrane of arteries
Tunica media
Smooth and elastic muscle fibers, arteries also have and external elastic membrane
Tunica externa
Collagen fibers with vaso vasorum
Blood circulation in fetus
Umbilical vein brings oxygen and nutrient rich blood to fetus from placenta and the umbilical artery brings blood waste from fetus back to placenta
Umbilical arteries become
Medial umbilical ligaments
Umbilical veins become
Ligamentum teres
Ductus venosus becomes
Ligamentum venosum
Foramen ovale becomes
Fossa ovalis
Ductus arteriosus becomes
Ligamentum arteriosum
