  • At the age of 5 Artaud caught meningitis and began a prolonged nervous disorders.
  • He was prescribed opium which lead to a life-long addiction.
  • He was expelled from the surrealist movement due to this.

What were some of the inspirations for his work?

A

The Balinese Dancers
- in 1931, he saw a performance by Balinese dancers that mesmerised him and inspired his search for ritual in performance.
- This resulted in his creation of ‘Dionysian Theatre’ that focussed on the darker side of human nature of passion accessed through rituals.
