Mixing or combining colours or tones.
3.4 Blotting
Using tissue to absorb or remove unwanted colour or excess water from a painting.

Applying paint in quick, short strokes with a brush.
3.6 Dabbing
Applying the paint in a downwards motion to create uneven ‘spots’ of colour or tone.
3.7 Wash
Applying water or a very light colour mixed with water to the paper evenly using a wide brush (no puddles!).
3.8 Sponging
Applying paint to a surface using a sponge.
3.9 Render
To present or depict in an artistic way.
5.1 Realistic
An artwork which looks like a photograph.

An artwork which looks similar to real life.

An artwork with visible brushstrokes, showing how paint was applied.

An artwork that does not represent anything. It is made up of shapes, colours and patterns.

Art that shows emotion, i.e. splatters, brushstrokes etc.

Art that is dream-like or strange.
