Long, curvy, organic lines.

What was Art Nouveau a response to?
It was deliberately created to be free of the imitative historicism that dominated the 19th century.

Natural forms and structures, especially in curved lines.

Every element played a part in the same visual vocabulary. (The furniture was a part of the architecture). Creating a ‘whole’.

Many Art Nouveau designers felt that 19th century design had been excessively ornamental, what belief did they evolve?
The belief that the function of an object should dictate it’s form. Frivolous decoration should be avoided.

Henry van der Velde (1863 - 1957) He was against copying historical styles, opting for original new designs.
