why is light a danger to artworks? how can prevent?
strong light damage can fade/discolor. under 50 lux, stored in complete darkness, avoid direct sun lighting, framed under protective glass
why is temp, humidity a danger? how can prevent?
too dry can create brittle, crack, flake, too moist can dampen, above 60% can mold, automated machines and sensors to controle temp + humidity, check for fungus/mold.
keep between 18-20c and 45-55%
why are insects a danger? how can prevent?
can infiltrate artworks, bread in mounts/frames, silverfish can eat surface of paper, no insect spray = stains artworks, galleries use insect traps to manage problem
what is atmosphere polution? how can prevent?
smoking, car fumes, no smoking signs and air filltration systems
how is handeling artwork a danger? how can prevent?
grit, grime, grease, oil on hands = damaging
protective measures, clean cotton gloves
how should artworks be stores? why?
solander box = lined with acid free material, light tight, stable humidity + temp
protects from insects + polution too
what is restoration
not fixing the artworks in a way that affects integrity or intention. changes should be reversable. need detailed scientific knolage.
