John singleton copley boy witha flying squirrel

step father taught him art of engraving but became a painter
cannot afford to go to England to go to ry academy
he sends letter to west asking how to become an artist
he is then tutored in painting via letter this painting is his first which he sends to west for evaluation
chain attatched himself to flying squirrel in painting
squirrel eating peanut which is native to the new world
squirrel shows no desire to run away
chain is a symbol relating to the great chain of being God is at top of chain and soon after is man followed by other things like animals hence squirrel is in its place and doesn’t want to run away
elements earth wind and fire are embedded in work (wind by flying squirrl fire by chain)

Copleys father in laws tea gets dumped into Boston harbor in Boston tea party resulting in Copley moving permanently to England
normally people are dressed in finest for paintings but paul revere is simply dressed
hence being displayed appropriately for his job which is a silversmith but also shows his skill/craft hence acts as a advertisement

Watson and the shark -John Singleton Copley

A

guy in water survives shark attack

his name was brook watson

he was a cabin boy in 1749

he foes for a swim after finishing work then gets attacked by shark as he is swimming

they attacked him 3 times taking his legs but he survived after people drive the sharks away

this story was in the newspaper at the time and the story became famous

although he was left one legged he became a wealthy and famous merchant due to the event.

message in painting is Britain is in danger of loosing it colonies but it can survive and come back better than ever just as Watson did
ships sails look like crosses symbolizing a divine or bigger plan
