Colour
The application of different wavelengths of light and their interactions within a piece. They vary in colour temperature, hue, saturation, value and colour schemes.
Shape
The application of an enclosed 2D spaces and their design language within a piece. They can be organic, geometric, sharp, round or block.
Line
The application of two points connected by a distance with there emphasis and clarity integral to a piece. It can be curved, straight, thick, thin, dashes or taper.
Texture
The application of suggesting tactile sensation what materials it is comprised of in a piece. It can be sticky, rough, smooth, fluffy, sharp, or solid.
Tone
The application of suggesting depth through the usage of lighting and shading in a piece. It can create emphasis, dimension and atmosphere.
Form
The application of 3D objects creating distance and dimension with perspective to give life to a piece. It can be long, tall, wide, short, spherical, angular and cylindrical.
Sound
Can be heard as noise,
words or music and is generally
used to create atmosphere or
meaning in a time-based artwork. It
can be natural, mechanical or
manipulated.
Time
Refers to the duration of the
period in which things happen. Time
can be represented in an artwork.
Some cultures view time as a linear
path, while others view it as a circle.
It is an element in
a number of art forms, which requires
the passage of time, such as
performance, installation and new
media, including online art, video and
computer games. These works are
sometimes referred to as four-
dimensional.
Light
In 2D art, light is an illusion created by tone or contrast. It can also refer to the way an artwork is lit in an exhibition space. light can be an integral, although ephemeral , element of a time-based artwork.
