America’s oldest art school/first art school in America. Artists no longer had to go to Europe to study. Ex. Mary Cassatt.
Salon / Salon des Refusés / Salon des Independantes
The Salon is an annual art show & competition held in Paris for the best artists in Western Europe. Salon des Refusés was a show held one year for the paintings rejected from the original salon. It was a disaster. The Salon des Independantes was the first Impressionist show.
Series
painting the same thing many times at different times of the day to show how light affects it. Ex. Haystacks at Giverny
Impasto
paint applied in thick layers. Van Gogh used this technique as did Monet & others.
Naïve
Painting done by an untrained artist. Ex. H. Rousseau
Cubism
the 1st abstract movement of the 20th century. Started by Picasso. It is done by simplifying the form, then breaking it apart & then putting it pack together again
