Q

What is the relationship between art and science (Cubism) and art and music (Kandinsky)?

A

Art and Science: It helped launch cubism by drawing inspiration from theory of relativity and non-Euclidean geometry, leading to the fragmentation of objects from multiple perspectives
Old ideas of matter, time, and space are shattered

Kandinsky explored the relationship between color and form to create a visual experience. He believed that music and art were tied to one another. He connected sight, sound, and emotions of the viewer. He also tried to paint what music sounds like by equating color, form, and composition in his paintings with the harmonies, rhythms, and emotional resonances because music evokes feelings and moods. This offered a possibility of profound expression and questioned the relationship between art and music.

Q

How did the Mexican Revolution impact the artists that painted murals in Mexico?

A

After the mexican revolution they were trying to establish their identity visually. Most Mexicans didn’t know how to read so they used murals as a way to educate the people on Mexican history and current identity. Government sponsored the art for the people, even though it sometimes criticized the government. They often emphasized Mexico’s pre-columbian past to create a new national identity. (Mestizo created as a result of mixing races with indigenous people)
