Arrhythmias & Drugs Flashcards
What is the treatment for atrial ectopic beats?
Generally none
beta-blockers
avoid stimulants
How is an acute SVT treated?
Compromised - DC cardioversion
Uncompromised - vagal manoeuvres (carotid massage, valsalva manoeuvre)
How is AF spotted on ECG?
no p waves
irregularly irregular pulse
atrial rate >300bpm
What are the symptoms of AF?
SOB Syncope palpitations sweatiness fatigue dysponea
How is AF treated?
Vagal manoeuvres
rate control - B-blockers, CaCB, digoxin
rhythm control - anti-arrythmias class 1 and 3
Cardioversion or cathetar ablation
How is sinus bradycardia treated?
Atropine
Pacing if haem. compromised
What is 1st degree heart block?
P-R interval is longer than normal
What is Mobitz type 1 heart block?
progressive lengthening of the PR interval
What is Mobitz type 2 heart block?
PR interval constant but a dropped beat occurs after every 2nd or 3rd QRS
What treatment is used for Mobitz type 1 and 2 and 3rd degree heart block?
Permanent pacing
What is 3rd degree heart block?
P waves are independent of wide QRS complexes
How is WPW syndrome treated?
Amiodarone, sotalol. flecainide
How is VF recognised on an ECG?
Chaotic ventricular activity, ECG totally disorganised - incompatible with life
How is VF treated?
Defibrillation
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
What are the symptoms of ventricular tachycardia?
Chest pain
hypotension
altered consciousness
