Arousal Theories Flashcards
Definition for Drive Theory
Arousal and performance relationship is linear. As arousal increases, performance levels increases proportionally.
Definition for Inverted U theory
As arousal rises, so does performance, up until level of optimal arousal. If arousal is too high or too low performance will decrease gradually
Definition for Catastrophe theory
when cognitive anxiety is high, somatic anxiety is low it equals enhanced performance but when cognitive anxiety is high and when somatic anxiety is high it causes performance to deteriorate. Players can try and lower arousal, through performance doesn’t return to original level immediately. Failing to control arousal means performance still deteriorates.
Define the IZOF theory
The individual zone of optimal functioning is an individuals response to increases of arousal in different ways due to everyone having different levels of arousal.
