develops from enterochromaffin cells (hormone- producing cells that normally are found in the small intestine, colon, rectum, pancreas, pulmonary bronchi.
Carcinoid tumors produce many types of hormones( serotonin, dopamine, bradykinins, tachykinins), often in large amounts, and other substances that have profound effects on the circulatory system (heart and blood vessels), GI, and the lungs
Typical carcinoid symptoms include:
- flushing (due to dilation of blood vessels by tachykinins)
- diarrhea (most likely due to serotonin)
- wheezing (due to brochospasm (airway narrowing)
- Carcinoid Syndrome is a combination of symptoms caused by the hormones released by the tumors into blood stream
