Arnoff Study - Evidence For Maslow Flashcards
what did arnoff study which provides evidence for the hierarchy of needs?
tested whether higher levels of the hierarchy are only satisfied once lower levels have been satisfied.
what was the procedure?
- compared people in 2 jobs in the British west indies, fishermen and cane cutters
- cane cutters got paid according to how much cane was cut, had job security but low wage
- fishermen worked alone doing more challenging work, less secure in job
- both groups were assessed to see what level they were on the hierarchy of needs
what were the results?
more cane cutters were at the lower levels of the hierarchy still trying to achieve safety and security than fishermen many of whom had satisfied the lower levels in the hierarchy.
what was the conclusion?
only men who had satisfied lower levels of the pyramid would chose to become fishermen, this suggests that people cannot reach the higher levels until they hae satisfied lower levels.
evaluation?
supports maslows hierarchy of needs theory
ecological validity
only studied people from one culture so results cant be generalised.
