What are the air defense warning conditions?
Red - attack is imminent
Yellow - attack is probable
White - attack is probably
What are the weapon control statuses?
Weapons free - fire at any target not positively identified as friendly
Weapons tight - fire only at targets identified as hostile
Weapons hold - fire only when told or in self defense
What is area defense?
Broad area utilizing various combinations of sensor and shooters
What is point air defense?
Protect limited areas such as vital elements of the force or installations
What are the classes of defensive counterair?
Active and passive
What is active air and missile defense?
Direct defensive action taken to destroy or reduce effectiveness of hostile air and missile threats
What is passive air and missile defense?
Detection and warning
Camouflage
Hardening
Redundancy
What does the Army Air and Missile Defense Command Commander (AAMDC) do?
-Falls under the JFLCC
-Army’s lead organization of air and missile defense
-Usually designated the Theater Army Air and Missile Defense Coordinator (TAAMDCOORD)
What does the Air Defense Artillery Fire Control Officer (ADAFCO) do?
-located with appropriate engagement authority
-the Army single point of contact between land-based AMD fire direction centers and the joint or Army controlling authority
-NOT a commander but helps engage targets
What is the THAAD? What are its capabilities?
Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD): protect the homeland, deployed military forces, friends, and allies from short and medium range ballistic missiles
-wide area defense from theater BM
-falls into the ADA BDE
-AN/TPY-2 radar, launcher, fire control, missile
-THAAD BTRY: 6 launchers, 8 missiles, 1 fire control shelter, 1 radar
What is the Patriot and what does it do?
Patriot: : Protect forces and selected geopolitical assets from aerial attack, missile attack, and surveillance
-lower tier of ballistic missile defense
-ADA BDE
-phased array radar
-launcher
-engagement control station
What is SHORD and what does it do?
SHORD: Short-range air defense (SHORAD) defeat slow-altitude fixed-wing, rotary-wing, UAS, cruise missiles, rockets, artillery and mortars
-stinger, avenger, M-SHORAD, sentinel radar, phalanx weapons
