A
USA first used atomic bombs august 1945 - broke the war time alliance and led to increase in tension
Soviets got their first atomic bomb august 1949
USA built hydrogen bomb 1952 and soviets followed in 1953
By 1960 both could completely wipe each other out-known as mutually assured destruction
