Q

List the types of syringes available

A

Positive pressure applied to the thumb ring forces local anaesthetic into the needle lumen and into the patients tissues. Come in three types: aspirating, self-aspirating and non- aspirating
• Self aspirating: Automatic aspiration occurs by a light pressure on the plunger
• Non- aspirating: Plunger does not engage rubber bung in dental cartridge

Q

What are the types of loadings?

A
  • Breech loading: Plunger is pulled completely to the end to allow syringe to open and the handle is bent to slide cartridge in
  • Side loading: Cartridge is inserted via the side Plunger is pull completely to the end to allow this

Q

Describe local anaesthetic solutions and needles

A
  • Comes in cartridges or vials
  • The cartridges have a silicon cap om top which the cartridge penetration end of the needles enters through
  • This silicone is surrounded by brass
  • Sometimes the needle doesn’t penetrate through the silicon and instead hits the brass, thus it bends

Q

Describe 4 types of new methods of delivery methods of LA

A

Oraqix
• Lignocaine 25 mg/g and Prilocaine 25 mg/g) Periodontal gel
• Oraqix is a clear, colourless gel indicated in adults for localised anaesthesia in periodontal pockets for probing, scaling and/or root planing
• The Oraqix Dispenser is indicated for the administration of Oraqix
• Liquid which gels at body temperature
• Onset 30s
• Duration 17-20mins

The wand: computerised delivery
• Regulates flow rate and pressure
• Claims to reduce or eliminate pain on injection
• Need proprietary equipment

Vibrotactile devices
• Old technique of pinching and shaking the cheek in maxillary technique
• Brain is focused on the vibration, the perception of pain reduced (gate theory)
• Newer devices try to mimic this

Jet injectors
• Use pressure to penetrate tissue without the use of a needle
