philia, relationship between equals who share the same virtues, best versions of ourselves
Goal of Philia
To facilitate a flourishing life
Characteristics of Philia
other-oriented, unselfish and symmetrical
conditional on the beloved being virtuous
only a virtuous person will recognize and desire virtue in another
How is Philia Expressed
expressed through activities central to an individuals values/life
must be one’s main relationship; may not be compatible with another close second relation
Self-Knowledge and Self-Love
Self-Knowledge: view ourselves reflected in the other; other person is a “second self”
Self-Love: increases our self-esteem; see ourselves through the esteem the other has for us
