arguments based on observation (teleo) Flashcards
what argument is the teleological argument ?
design argument
what does the teleological argument require us to do?
look at the world around us an use it to draw conclusions
who are the two key scholars for the teleological argument?
paley
aquinas
what analogy did Paley use to suggest design? explain analogy?
watch analogy, someone found a complex watch and would notice how well it works to tells the time, and would conclude that someone must have made it, rather than it had happened by chance, or by random ordering of patterns
how does a watch link to the earth?
how well it works- one can only infer that there must be a divine intelligence ordering it.
what did Paley say about design and purpose?
everything clearly designed but is designed for a purpose; and it is designed to an infinite degree if care.
Paley had two main arguments about design what was argument one?
design qua purpose
what is design qua purpose?
everything in the world shows design, and it has been designed for a reason otherwise it would not have been designed to start with
Paley quote about the watch?
“every manifestation design, which existed in the watch, exists in the works of nature”
Paley looked at things in science what did he analyse?
- human eye= extra ordinary flexibility
- wings of bird= engineered for flight
Cicero quote to support paleys argument?
“what could be more clear …when we look up to the sky and contemplate the heavens, than the there is some divinity or superior intelligence”
what does the second part of Paleys argument show?
design qua regularity
what does design qua regularity mean and what examples did he use to explain this?
design shows regularity, routine and consistency such as
- astronomy
- newtons laws of motion
- gravity
what was paleys conclusion of design qua regularity?
external agents must have imposed order on the universe as a whole and on its many parts= GOD
was Aquinas before or after Paley?
before
