What is an argument
Argumentation is a process of reasoning which shows justification and explanation for a given judgement or conclusion
What are the 2 basic statements of an argument?
- Premise statement
- Conclusion statement
What is a premise
It is a supporting statement. It is the starting point of an argument, containing the known truth from which the inferential move begins
What is a conclusion
It is a supported statement, the statement that is accepted as true on the basis of the premise
When is an argument valid
It is valid when the conclusion follows from the premises and vice versa
When is an argument sound
An argument is sound with respect to its matter
What is a conjunctive argument
This form of argument is one in which the truth or falsity of two separate propositions are considered
What is a disjunctive argument
It is when the two components of a statement are mutually exclusive
What is a hypothetical argument
A certain condition is set with the idea in mind that, I’d that condition is met, then certain consequences will follow
Types of argument process
- Deductive argument
- Inductive argument
What is a deductive argument process
This argument proceeds from general or universal instances in order to draw a particular conclusion
What is an inductive argument process
This one proceeds form particular or singular instances in order to draw a general or universal conclusion
What are some indicators for premises
Because, since, on account of etc.
What are some indicators for conclusions
Therefore, thus, consequently etc.
