A
  • Originally a Bordeaux variety
  • Most important variety for red wines
  • Full-bodied wines
  • Med-to-high levels of tannins (some are suitable for aging)
  • Dark fruit character, often with spicy flavors (blackberry, black plum, clove, pepper) and best benefit from oak aging.
  • Common to blend Malbec and Cab or Merlot
  • Most plantings in Mendoza

  • Local speciality for white wines
  • Aromatic variety
  • Med-bodied dry white wines
  • High alcohol
  • Medium acidity
  • Pronounced fruity/floral aromas (perfume, grapes, peach)
  • Widely grown but the best examples come from the Cafayate region in the Northern province of Salta
