Areolar Connective Tissue Flashcards
What is areolar connective tissue?
Areolar connective tissue is the most widespread connective tissue of the body
What is areolar tissue used for?
It is used to attach the skin to the underlying tissue
What does areolar do between organs?
It fills the spaces between various organs and thus holds them in place as well as cushions and protects them
What does areolar tissue surround?
It surrounds and supports the blood vessels
Explain the arrangement of the fibres of areolar connective tissue
- arranged in no particular pattern
- run in all direction
- form a loose network in the intercellular material
Describe the appearance and contents of areolar connective tissue fibres
- white collagen fibres are predominant
- usually appear as broad pink bands
- some yellow elastic fibres (thin, dark) also present
Which cellular elements in the areolar connective tissue are visible/not visible?
- fibroblasts are difficult to distinguish
- mast cells are usually visible
What do mast cells contain?
They have course, dark-staining granules in their cytoplasm
