Adipose Connective Tissue Flashcards
By what are the cells of adipose tissue characterised?
A large internal fat droplet
What happens to the large internal fat droplet in the cells of adipose tissue?
The large internal fat droplet distends the cell so that
- the cytoplasm is reduced to a thin layer
- the nucleus is displaced to the edge of the cell
Are cells of adipose tissue more present singly or in groups?
They may appear singly but are more often present in groups
What happens when cells of adipose tissue accumulate in large numbers?
They become the predominant cell type and form adipose (fat) tissue
What does adipose tissue serve as a site for?
Adipose tissue serves as a storage site for lipids
What does adipose tissue do in terms of protection?
Adipose tissue pads and protects certain organs and regions of the body
What does adipose tissue form?
It forms an insulating layer under the skin which helps regulate body temperature
