Archeology Flashcards
What is archaeology
Archaeology is the study of the remains of the past left, left by people
What is an excavation
Digging up the ground in search for artifacts
How do archaeologists find sites
The ruins of an old building. An aerial photograph. Rescue archaeology. Accidental. Research archaeology.
How is evidence preserved?
Evidence can be preserved thousands of years if the conditions are right. Extreme heat can prevent decay, preserving them.
Radiocarbon dating
All living things contain carbon 14 when they are alive after death the level of carbon 14 begins to drop this means the less carbon 14 the older it is.
Geophysical survey
Geo physical survey is an x-ray of the ground without an excavation.
Pollen analysis
The study of pollen remains to find out what was growing during a time. it can be used to date objects and tell us when forest were cleared and farming began.
Stratigraphy
Method is used to date artefacts by high deep in the grind they were found. The deeper they are the older they are.
Dendrochronolgy
Tree ring dating using the patterns of tree rings to see how old they are.
DNA testing
DNA tests tell us where they are from until they were.
Conservation
Is when historic objects are protected and preserved so they don’t decay.
