How to make a Kouros?
- Draw a grid on a quarried block of marble or limestone
- Draw a figure of the Kouros on all sides
- Carve away all excess
Reasons for adopting the Kouros pose?
Marble and limestone have a low-tensile strength, so most easy to stay intact.
Had difficulties with foreshortening (perspective of having shorter limbs.

- Has 1 line of vertical symmetry and 2 lines of horizontal symmetry.
- Sculptors were more interested in depicting and exploring shape and symmetry than the realistic human form.
- Was naked because of homoerotic culture.
- 1.93m tall/exaggerated life size.
- Disproportionate eyes, waist and height
- Symmetry shown in beaded hair because real hair texture was too difficult. Shows Egyptian influence.

Kleobis and Biton/The Delphi Twins

History of The Delphi Twins?
Made after the story of the twins of Kleobis and Biton after they died pulling their mother’s carriage to a festival. Their mother then had a statue of them put in the temple to Hera. Croesus (wealthy king) had asked Solon who the happiest people were and Solon had said them because they’d died publicly honoured and praised.
