Arch. Tools Flashcards
Concept Of Culture
… a complex, organized, integrated system of learned, adaptive, behavior acquired primarily through the use of symbols
Principle of Cultural Relativity
An ethical position, endorsed by Franz Boas, holds that:
1) a culture must set aside our own values to study and understand other people
2) we must set aside our own values to study and understand other people
Holistic Perspective
Anthropologist attempt to understand all aspects of people’s lives – particular traits are always studied in the context of the whole culture
Evolutionary Perspective
All humans alive today are members of the same species, Homo sapiens, sole surviving species of the genus Homo. We are a product of our evolutionary history
The comparative Method
The search for similarities and differences, and for human universals, is carried out by systematic examination of two or more cultures, point by point
Empirical Method
Data are gathered personally and usually first-hand; the anthropologist observes and experiences the culture he or she studies.
In linguistic and ethnographic research this is called participant observation.
In archaeology it is ethnoarchaeology
