What is AIDS?
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
what does AIDS cause ?
Profound immunosuppression, Associated opportunistic infection, Malignant tumors, Central nervous system degeneration
what does HIV do?
HIV infects primary cells of the immune system (eg. CD4+ cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells.)
what family group is the HIV a member of?
lentivirus family of animal retroviruses
what are the two types of HIV?
HIV 1 (common cause of AIDS) and HIV 2 ( differs genomic structure and cause a from of AIDS with slower progression)
whats the structure of HIV?
two identical strands of RNA.
* Packaged within a core of viral proteins and surrounded by a phospholipid bilayer envelope
what is the pathogensis of HIV?
HIV starts of as an acute infection
what treatment isused for HIV?
early diagnosis - reduces spread of diseases
Anti-retroviral treatment is effective, but once it is started it is lifelong.
