Aquaculture Flashcards

1
Q

Why can’t the current state of aquaculture in the world address food security?

A

-FCR is often too high to be sustainable
-Environmental degradation and lower water quality
-Lack of governance and regulations
-Disease risk

Q

What are the desirable attributes of an aquaculture species?

A

-Fast growth rate
-Low FCR
-Non marine high availability food source preferred (e.g. grains)
-Tolerance to fluctuating temperature, water quality and high stocking density
-Resistant to disease
-Easy and cheap to harvest
-High value but low production cost
-Easy to breed

Q

Contrast the two types of aquaculture systems.

A

Open system:
-No water reuse
-Low level of management
-Low stocking density
-Low yield
-Natural water
-Natural food source
-High predation
-Extensive

Closed system:
-total water reuse
-high level of management
-High stocking density
-High yield
High water quality, filtration
-Supplied food
-No predation
-Intensive

Q

What are the aquaculture issues?

A

-Output pollution (e.g. water quality)
-Biosecurity (e.g. Pathogen, people and animal management)
-Waste removal (e.g. drainage)
-Feed production (e.g. reliability of food, storage, cost)
