- Select collaborators carefully and have them involved early in the grant-writing process

Understand the types of costs involved when preparing a budget (4 things)
- Direct/indirect costs
- Cost Sharing: grant-seeking organizations share costs
- Budget narrative (explains all the costs)
- Appendixes- carefully selected materials that directly support the proposal
Understand the difference between direct and indirect costs.
Direct: concrete project expenditures
Indirect: overhead, facilities, and administrative costs

Federal grant to the state or local community for broad purposes
Equipment Grant
Grant that gives money to purchase equipment
Project Grant
Asks for funding to execute a research project
